Follow the Line Racetrack Challenge
In this LEGO NXT robotics challenge, student teams will design and program an autonomous robot capable of completing a full timed lap around a black-lined racetrack. The track features a continuous 1-inch black line on a white background with wide, smooth curves and a central gray square marking the start and finish area. Each robot must be programmed to follow the black line, but stop when it senses the gray area, using either one or two downward-facing LEGO light or color sensors.
Instructions and Rules
At the start, one team member places the robot in the gray square with the light or color sensor positioned over the black line. Upon the judge’s signal, the robot is activated and must navigate the loop, returning to the starting square to stop the timer. If the robot leaves the track, the team may reposition it, but the timer continues to run. Use of more than one line sensor is permitted, though each additional sensor may incur a time penalty.
The goal is simple: complete the lap in the shortest time possible while demonstrating precision, programming skill, and effective sensor use. The competition emphasizes teamwork, design strategy, and robotics fundamentals in a fun, hands-on environment.
The robot will start in the gray square with its light or color sensor over the black line when the timer begins.
The robot must complete one full loop of the track.
The timer stops when the robot returns to the gray square.
Robots that lose the line may be repositioned, but time continues.
Robots can use one or two light or color sensors.
Track Setup
The Racetrack will be created using Robotsquare's Mindstorm Tile Template (.pdf).
The Racetrack has a white background with a 1-inch-wide black line loop.
The course includes curves, loops, and a central path, requiring precise navigation.
A gray square marks both the start and finish zone.
